Dry needling is a treatment technique where your therapist will insert a sterile, single-use, fine needle into the muscle to improve function through the release of myofascial trigger points. Myofascial trigger points are knots in the muscle that may build up from certain occurrences like injury, unexpected movements, nerve impingements, or overuse. Dry needling has been shown to help decrease the pain associated with these ailments. We also offer quality chiropractic care in our physical therapy clinic.
What are Myofascial Trigger Points?
Myofascial trigger points are a group of muscle fibers that have become shortened when activated and are unable to lengthen back to a relaxed state after use. Essentially, if your muscle fiber becomes too tight, it is unable to function normally which can cause pain, lack of mobility and inflammation.
Dry needling works to improve function by restoring the muscle’s ability to length and shorten at a normal range. When the needle is inserted into the trigger point, blood will pool and trigger the contracted muscle fiber to relax by supplying those fibers with fresh oxygen.
